Precision Medicine Summer 2021 Graduate Internships
in Science Policy and Research Administration

The California Initiative to Advance Precision Medicine supports collaborative research and fosters partnerships between scientists, communities, and industry to improve health outcomes and reduce disparities. For Summer 2021, the program is seeking two highly qualified graduate students to join the team for four months. Applications are due by Noon (Pacific Time) on Friday, April 16, 2021. Data Visualization Internship

  • 12 hours/week (flexibly scheduled) May - September 2021
  • Paid $18-22/h; Remote/Virtual participation
  • Primary project: revamp the CA Precision Medicine Asset Inventory to improve functionality and user interface. Note: The Asset Inventory currently runs on Tableau, this project will focus on an ArcGIS version of the Inventory, to be released later this year. Eligibility

  • California-based graduate students (Masters or Doctoral)
  • Enrolled at or a recent graduate from (within 2 months) a university affiliated with the California Intern Network
  • Pursuing or achieved a degree in a field relevant to Precision Medicine, such as Data Sciences, Bioinformatics, Clinical or Biomedical Sciences, Health Disparities, Engineering, Bioethics, Genetics, Epidemiology, or Health Policy

Requirements

  • General GIS skills (shapefiles, data prep, etc.)
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS Desktop and Online (software license provided)
  • Experience programming in Python and SQL
  • Bonus points for experience programming in R
  • Highly detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Good interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
  • Ability to prioritize, multitask and meet deadlines
  • A passion to be a contributor to an interdisciplinary team
  • A driving desire to learn and improve

Science Communications & Graphic Design Internship

  • 8 hours/week (flexibly scheduled) May - September 2021
  • Paid $18-22/h; Remote/Virtual participation
  • Primary duties: Work with the team to write content and create infographics and other design elements of webpages, newsletters, and print materials that reflect scientific research and concepts for policymakers, community, research, and industry partners, and the lay public.

Eligibility

  • California-based graduate students (Masters or Doctoral)
  • Enrolled at or a recent graduate from (within 2 months) a university affiliated with the California Intern Network
  • Pursuing or achieved a degree in a field relevant to Science Communication, Graphic Design, or Precision Medicine, such as Data Sciences, Bioinformatics, Clinical or Biomedical Sciences, Health Disparities, Engineering, Bioethics, Genetics, Epidemiology, or Health Policy

Requirements

  • Proficiency with digital design and prototyping tools such as Illustrator, Photoshop, and Canva
  • Good understanding of typography, color, composition, and layout
  • Fundamental understanding of design and best branding practices
  • Strong and flexible skills in design for web/social media and print
  • Good illustration skills
  • Highly detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Good interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
  • Ability to prioritize, multitask and meet deadlines
  • A passion to be a contributor to an interdisciplinary team
  • A driving desire to learn and improve
